About Shimla

Shimla, or Shimla, is popularly known as a summer refuge. It was a summer capital during the days of colonial rule, and remains so today to escape the scorching heat. The year 1906 was instrumental in making this city what it is today. When the Kalka-Shimla railway line was laid that year, it made the area more accessible.

Shimla had the privilege of being the capital of undivided Punjab until 1971, after which Himachal Pradesh was separated from Punjab. Shimla city is the headquarters of Shimla district. The city has many temples, palaces and colonial architecture, which attracts tourists from all over the world.

Its main industries are agriculture, horticulture and tourism. As per the records of the Himachal Pradesh government, the hilly region is covered with forests in an area of 1,30,411 hectares. Large forests also contribute significantly to Shimla's economy.

Connectivity

The nearest airport is about 23 km away, called Jubbarhatti Airport, which provides flight services to Chandigarh, Delhi, Kullu and Dharamsala. The harsh weather conditions sometimes close the airport so Chandigarh airport is your next best option. Gaggal and Bhuntar airports are also in the state of Himachal Pradesh.

Kalka Junction railway station is the nearest broad gauge station serving the city at a distance of about six hours. Shimla has a meter gauge station. The narrow gauge track between Shimla and Kalka is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Kalka Junction is connected to many major cities of India

National Highway 22 (NH-22) connects Shimla with many towns and cities like Chandigarh, Ambala, New Delhi Road and even Khab on the China border.

Himachal Road Transport Corporation and other private agencies provide various types of bus services to Shimla. Luxury buses are often available on this route.

Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation runs tourist buses daily to handle the movement of tourists. Local buses and taxis are also available for transportation within Shimla.

Shimla Infrastructure
